BuyBye is an app that helps you pause before buying by showing how long you would have to work to afford something and what that money could grow into if you invested it instead. After seeing the tradeoff, you can choose Buy, Don’t Buy, or Unsure. When you tap Don’t Buy, BuyBye tracks what you skipped so you can see how much you have saved over time and stay motivated toward your goal.
BuyBye creates a small pause before you spend. When you see a purchase in hours worked and future savings, it becomes easier to decide if the item is actually worth it.
Enter your income, age, and the price of something you want to buy. BuyBye shows how much work time that item costs and estimates what the money could grow into by age 65 if it were invested instead. You can also browse the Worth It section for popular purchases.
The Unsure option is for purchases you are not ready to say yes or no to yet. You can set a reminder for 24 hours, 48 hours, or 1 week later, giving yourself time to cool off and decide if you still actually want it. You can also choose not to be reminded at all, because sometimes leaving it alone is the answer.
A price can feel abstract. Seeing a purchase as hours of your life makes the tradeoff more real, so you can decide if it is worth the time you spent earning that money.
Invested Instead estimates what the purchase amount could grow into over time if it were saved or invested instead of spent today. BuyBye defaults this calculation to a 10% annual return, which is long-term historical average of the S&P 500.
No, BuyBye is intentionally unlinked. It keeps things simple, avoids bank connection issues, and helps you stay more aware of your spending by entering purchases yourself.
Manual input keeps you face to face with your spending. Automatic tracking can be convenient, but it can also fade into the background. BuyBye is designed to keep you more tuned in.
The 100 Envelope Challenge is a savings challenge where you open envelopes numbered from 1 to 100 and save the amount shown. If you complete all 100 envelopes, you save $5,050.
BuyBye Budget Planner lets you set budgets for different categories and see how much you have left as you go through the month. You can also view your budget in hours worked, so things like rent, groceries, and fun spending feel easier to understand.
The Daily Budget Challenge lets you shake your phone to generate a random budget for the day. Then the challenge is to stay within that amount, making frugal living feel more like a game.
Shop Block lets you block selected shopping apps. When you try to open one, BuyBye shows a motivational mantra to help you rethink the impulse and remember why you set it up in the first place.
BuyBye is for people who want a simple, less intimidating way to spend more intentionally. It is especially helpful if you impulse buy, overspend, or want to understand your money without setting up a complicated budgeting system.
